Reeds:
Advanced:
For those who looking for guidance on how to make a genuine baroque style reed, and how it should differ from modern reeds, the following page by Professor David Rachor, University of Northern Iowa School of Music, offers invaluable advice.

Ms Uchida Yuka has a baroque bassoon home page, most of which is in Japanese, but she has provided an English translation for her page on reed dimensions, which contains some more examples than above, and she also has a page on how to make a reed that works on a Verjat/Eichentopf replica, although the reed she describes is actually just an enlarged version of a reed for a German bassoon (but, what the heck, it works!).
This is the link to her page (English version)

Makers:

Hans Mons dulcian home page now has a page for makers of historical bassoons. Highly recommended!

For other makers, please consult the Makers' Page on this site.

History of the bassoon:
Dulcian
: Hans Mons has a superb home page on the dulcian. Moreover, as many makers of baroque bassoon also make dulcians, his page on makers has wonderful photographs of both many makers and their works. Highly recommended!

Support, Advice, Friends:

Support and Advice:
The International Double-reed Society has a site which is an invaluable resource. Their discussion list has provided me with invaluable information and support over the years, and the archives contain articles by leading scholars and performer/teachers on relevant subjects. Both this site and its discussion list are oriented primarily towards modern bassoons and oboes, but there is also much that is either directed straight at historical instruments, or which also applies equally. COMPULSORY!!!

The Early Music Site: Invaluable discussion and advice specifically related to Early Music, but not specifically double-reed. For beginners, if you have the time and energy, I suggest subscribing to the discussion lists of both this and the IDRS. However, both these organisations charge a membership fee.

Repertoire for Voice and Obbligato Bassoon
A site listing over 200 pieces for voice and obbligato bassoon, with cross references to recordings and music sources. For some pieces you download the score directly from this site. If you have trouble getting a printout, I suggest that you try saving the music to your disk as an "mht" file, open this file with a word processor, and then check whether you can get a printout using the "Preview" function on your word processor.
