A Baroque Bassoon Discography
1) Discography
This is a list of CD recordings from my personal collection, which are either of
the baroque or classical bassoon, or feature either in some prominent way.
I make no pretensions to having made an exhaustive list, and welcome
recommendations and suggestions. If you are are looking for a specific
artist/composer/title, please use the search function on your browser. Unless
otherwise specified, "bassoon" here means "baroque bassoon." If you find
something on CD that you like and you want to acquire the sheet music for it,
please consult the "Acquiring Sheet Music" page.
| Composer/Title | Label/Number | Group/Artist | Comments | |
| C.P.E. Bach Wind Chamber Music. for | CPO 99 508-2. | Group: Fiati con Tasto Koeln. Has Ilka Wagner on classical bassoon | Pastorale for oboe, bassoon and b.c., and Six sonatas for fortepiano, clarinet and bassoon. | |

Bach 4 Ouvertueren.suites. |
Archiv 415 671-2 | Group: Musica Antiqua Koeln (Reinhard Goebel), Bassoonist: Michael McCraw. | Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music have done the same, but if you like robust interpretations of baroque music, I think that you will prefer MAK's version.
| Johann Sebastian Bach Ouvertures The 4 Orchestral Suites | BIS -SACD-1431 |
Group: Bach Collegium Japan(Dir. SUZUKI Masaaki) Bassoon: DOSAKA Kiyotaka |
The orchestral suites in a SACD format. Excellent playing rendered even better by the superior format (SACD).
| Johann Sebastian Bach Orchestral Suites | Fuga Libera FUG 580 |
Group: Il Fondamento (Dir. Paul Dombrecht) Bassoon: Alain de Rijckere |
The orchestral suites played according to he earliest manuscript versions, most notably without trumpets and timpani.

LABORIE Records ref.: LC04 |
Group:Reflexio Bassoon: Sergio Azzolini |
Azzolini plays BC on BWV 1035 & Trio Sonata BMV 1039/1027.
| Luigi Boccherini Fandango, Sinfonie & La Musica Notturna di Madrid |
Alla Vox AVSA 9845 (SACD Hybrid) |
Group: Le Concert des Nations (Dir. Jordi Savall) Bassoons: Claude Wassmer,Carkes Cristobal) |
There are only bassoons in the 2 Sinfonie, but the Fandango and Notturna are real gems. Where else can you find music which includes guitar, strings, flute and bassoons all in one CD?
| Boismortier and Antoine Dornel Concertos and Sonatas | Dynamic CDS 198 | Group:
Tripla Concordia, Bassoon: Maria De Martini. |
Mostly Boismortier, and no bassoon in the Dornel pieces.
| Joseph Bodin de Boismortier Serenades francaises | Naxos DDD 8.554456. | Group: Le
Concert Spirituel, Bassoon Laurent Le Chenadec. |
Has the Boismortier bassoon concerto, and uses the bassoon as a very active component in most of the other pieces. An added thrill is that this disque features the musette (baroque bagpipes) in a concerto, and some movements of the Fragments melodiques (tracks 2-13).

Group: La Fontaine Bassoonist: EZAKI Koji |
As with the other recordings by "La Fontaine," this disk is mostly oboe & recorder, and the strings are missing from the Brescianello "concerto," but a superb disk, more than worth the trouble of acquiring it. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
| Philipp Friedrich Buchner Plectrum Musicum | cpo 777 132-2 |
Group: Parnassi musici Bassoonist Sergio Azzolini, Nadia Perathoner |
Buchner's (1614-1669) music if from the early baroque, before the sonata style is defined. 15 sonatas that are unusual in that they use the bassoon instead of a cello in about 1-3 of the music.
| Archangelo Corelli Corelli in London |
Ricercar RIC 235 |
Group: La Pastorella Bassoon: Alain De Rijckere |
Sonatas op. V/4,7,12, Concerti Grossi op.VI/4,10,8(Christmas Concerto). Corelli done with recorders and bassoon. Excellent playing.
| Michel Corrette Les delices de la solitude (+ le phenix) | ATMA ACD2 2307 | Group: Les voix humaines Bassoon: Matthieu Lussier |
It is interesting to compare this desc with the performance of the same pieces by another Canadian group, Musica Franca, using modern instruments in an historically-informed performance. Moreover, Lussier plays 2nd bassoon on this disc as well (MSR Classics MS 1171)
| Francois Couperin Les Gouts-reunis | Decca 458 271-2 | Group:

| Antoine Dard | Ramee RAM 0702 | Bassoon: Ricardo Rapoport | Dard (1715-84) played bassoon in the Royal Academy of Music in Paris from 1760 on. His composition style reflects contemporary French taste, but his compositions reach up into the highest register, up to high c. | |
| Francois Devienne Six Sonates pour le Basson avec Accompagnement de Basse (1802). | Pavanne Records, Brussels. ADW 7416 (Site http://www.pavanne.com). | Artist TANAKA Masahito. | Tanaka plays an 1820 Savary-Jeune original classical bassoon. Virtuostic playing. | |

Trios and quadros for oboes and basson, but the bassoon is given a role equal to that of the oboes, and the continuo is filled in by a string and chordal instrument. Not as dynamic and firey as Zelenka, but still great listening

Despite the title, this is NOT Haendel's "Water Music" in full, but one excerpt from it, plus some other suites and sonatas. It is not the standard "Haendel recorder sonatas" at all. Virtuoso bassoon and recorder.

The composer lived from around 1580 until sometime after 1638. Virtuosic music for the dulcian.
Note 1: One particularly notable point about Il Giardino's interpretation of Vivaldi (from a bassoonist's point of view) is that they do not hesitate to introduce a bassoon in the pastoral movement in the Four Seasons to create a bucolic mood. However, there is also an irony to these recordings, in that some scholars argue that Vivaldi never wrote anything for the baroque bassoon, and that all his "bassoon" music is for the dulcian, the direct ancestor to the baroque bassoon. This would have placed his music at a higher pitch than modern "historical" pitch, and the instrument itself would have a somewhat different sound. Not all scholars agree with this interpretation, and others argue that it is indeed the bassoon that Vivaldi wrote for.
Bach: The Ton Koopman/Amsterdam
Baroque Orchestra recordings of the Bach
Cantatas recommended by Eduardo Adrian Rodriguez have been favourably
mentioned on the Early Music list. Another group you might want to explore
is the Bach Collegium Japan recordings of Bach choral works. The leader of
the group, Suzuki Masaaki studied under Koopman, and this recording received
very high praise from some members of the Early Music list. I have not
bought these recordings (I generally do not like choral music myself), but I
heard them perform the full Haendel's Messiah around Christmas, and they
were convincing enough for me to consider buying their CD's.
From Jon Halvor Lund: Another fine baroque bassoon player, who is not that
well known, but also a great musician, is Josep Borras. He has recorded a disc
together with Alfredo Bernardini on baroque oboe with Vivaldi concertos, 3 for
oboe (RV 455, 453 and 463), 3 for bassoon (RV 498, 477 and 488) and the double
concerto for oboe and bsn in G major. on the label Astree Auvidis, No E 8537.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in period instruments.
I also have a CD with Danny Bond, where he plays three solo concertos and three
concertos "con multi strumenti", also a great disc. (Academy of Ancient Music /
Chr. Hogwood / L'oiseau-Lyre 436867-2)
Peter de Koningh's list of recordings using his instruments is included on his home page at http://ourworld-top.cs.com/pdekoningh/cdcd.htm
Many thanks to Nicolas Renoult of

none of which I was able to procure locally in Japan.
